How to use this paver calculator
How many pavers you need is the patio area divided by the space one paver occupies once the joint is included. A 4 by 8 inch paver with a 1/8 inch joint covers about 0.233 square feet, so 100 square feet takes 430 pavers before waste. Enter the size printed on your product, not a nominal name.
Step-by-step instructions
- Measure the finished length and width in feet.
- Enter the actual paver face length and width in inches.
- Set the joint width and a waste percentage for cuts, then read the piece count.
Calculation formula
Important assumptions and limitations
One rectangular area and one paver size. The joint is added once to each side, which matches a regular grid. Curves, circles, borders and mixed sizes need separate measurements. No base, sand or edge restraint is included.
For material orders, confirm package yields, stock sizes and installation instructions with the actual manufacturer or supplier. Your building department determines the applicable local code; a quantity estimator is not a structural design or permit approval.
Frequently asked questions
How many pavers do I need per square foot?
Divide 144 by the installed footprint in square inches. That footprint is paver length plus the joint, times paver width plus the joint. A 4 by 8 inch paver with a 1/8 inch joint is about 4.3 pavers per square foot before waste.
Should the joint gap be included?
Yes, when stones are spaced apart. Adding the full joint to both dimensions is the grid pitch from one paver to the next. A zero joint uses the face size only.
Does this include gravel and sand?
No. Use the patio material calculator for base gravel, bedding sand and pavers together, or the paver base calculator for the layers under the stones.
